What Is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system estimated to affect more than 2.5 million people worldwide. MS is an unpredictable condition because it causes a wide variety of symptoms and manifests with different clinical findings and progression patterns for each patient.

Healthy nerve fibers are covered with a protective sheath made of myelin. This allows signals between cells to be easily transmitted. In multiple sclerosis, immune system cells mistakenly attack the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord, damaging the myelin sheath and disrupting normal nerve cell structure.

Multiple sclerosis is considered an unpredictable disease because it affects each patient differently. While some have only mild symptoms, others may lose their ability to speak or their balance and walking abilities.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a variable and irregular disease, and patients do not share the same symptoms. Most patients observe that their symptoms change over time, worsening or improving.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

Fatigue: Severe fatigue occurs in 80% of MS patients.

Numbness or tingling: Often one of the first symptoms to appear, usually involving numbness in the face, body, arms, or legs.

Vision problems: Blurred vision, impaired contrast vision, and painful eye movement are early symptoms for many MS patients.

Cognitive issues: Approximately half of all MS patients experience cognitive changes, including the ability to acquire, process, or remember information.

Dizziness: Can frequently cause complaints of vertigo or imbalance.

Pain: More than half of all MS patients generally have chronic pain complaints.

Spasticity: This involuntary muscle spasm or general muscle stiffness usually affects the legs of MS patients.

Walking difficulty: Weakness, loss of balance, and spasticity can cause walking difficulties.

Although everyone has a risk of developing MS, certain individuals are more likely to develop the disease. Women are approximately twice as likely as men to develop MS, and it is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is not genetically inherited, but having a family history of the disease creates a predisposition.

How Is Multiple Sclerosis Treated?

Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease without a cure. However, it can generally be managed with a comprehensive and strategic approach. A comprehensive MS treatment plan has three fundamental goals:

-Slow disease progression.

-Manage symptoms.

-Accelerate recovery from relapse attacks.

Frequently Asked Questions
